The Champs: Butch Goring

Butch Goring

The final piece of a Stanley Cup puzzle... the trade that brought him to Long Island was soon followed by the first of four straight championships... an offensive force to be reckoned with, especially when the Isles were down a man... his 18 shorthanded goals are second only to Anders Kallur's 19 on the Isles' all-time list... won the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the 1981 Stanley Cup playoffs, scoring 10 goals and 10 assists in 18 post-season games that year... played most of the 1981 finals with 40 stitches in his tongue, lower lip and chin as the result of being cut by a skate blade in the first game... tallied 375 regular-season goals, 513 assists and 888 points in 1,107 NHL games spanning 16 seasons... for the Isles, was 87-108-195 in 332 games... coached of the International Hockey League's Utah Grizzlies, a former Islander affiliate... guided the Grizzlies to the IHL championship in 1995 and 1996, and was named Coach of the Year in both seasons... his IHL coaching record was 235-141-33 in the regular season and he went 34-16 in the playoffs... was coach of the Islanders from 1999 to March 2001.

Here's more from Goring on the 1980-81 and 1982-83 seasons.
